Summary

An omnibus of Kouhei Kadono’s first three novels that started the hit franchise–a modern classic that sparked the light novel craze in Japan!

There is an urban legend about an Angel of Death that puts those in pain out of their misery。 This “shinigami” has a name—Boogiepop。 When female students start disappearing from Shinyo Academy, everyone assumes the girls have run away, but Kirima Nagi knows something sinister is afoot。 Something that might just involve Boogiepop…and an entity even more malevolent。

Told in a non-linear fashion that asks the reader to piece together the sequence of events to solve the mysteries alongside the characters, this special omnibus edition contains the first three volumes of the Boogiepop novel series, spanning the introduction of the shadowy Towa Organization, as well as Boogiepop’s epic battle against the creature known as the Imaginator。

Contains the first three novels:

Boogiepop and Others
-Boogiepop Returns: VS Imaginator Part 1
-Boogiepop Returns: VS Imaginator Part 2

I got this book so long ago and it has just stayed on the shelf and I was always kept putting off reading it。 Which is such a shame as it is such a great book! I love Boogiepop! He is a great character。 These stories are great as well。 I also enjoy this non-linear style of writing。 Sometimes this style confuses the heck out of me but I managed to keep up with this one。 The manticore and Imaginator stories are so good! I loved them。 Sadly, I am satisfied with that and probably will not try and ge I got this book so long ago and it has just stayed on the shelf and I was always kept putting off reading it。 Which is such a shame as it is such a great book! This definitely gave me a different view of the anime when reading the story vs watching the story unfold。 I still really enjoyed reading it, except when it felt like you were supposed to know what the name of a specific piece of classical music is supposed to sound like。 I'm guessing it's along the same lines of if we heard the "Danger Zone" song and knew it from either being in a movie, a movie trailer, a commercial, or on Archer since it's so popular and used everywhere。 The cast list is also This definitely gave me a different view of the anime when reading the story vs watching the story unfold。 I still really enjoyed reading it, except when it felt like you were supposed to know what the name of a specific piece of classical music is supposed to sound like。 I'm guessing it's along the same lines of if we heard the "Danger Zone" song and knew it from either being in a movie, a movie trailer, a commercial, or on Archer since it's so popular and used everywhere。 The cast list is also pretty large and seemed to build on itself with each story as previous characters would reappear and you had to remember who they were from the previous story。 It started to get a little hard to keep track of, but I guess it can be practice for me since I still want to read A Song of Ice and Fire at some point。 But anywho, if you're a fan of the anime, you'll enjoy this book。 Just be ready to look up some things on Google in case you get confused。 。。。more

This omnibus of the first three Boogiepop light novels wasn't for me。 The teen angst, overheated melodrama, weird horror and sci-fi tropes, depressing fatalism, sadistic violence, and persistent misogyny caused me to tune out。 Yep, I'm not a disaffected teen obsessed with Japanese anime。 Even as a teen I would have considered this book irritating。 Although the non-linear storytelling is intriguing, the chapters are basically short vignettes with only brief hints as to what's going on。 I never fe This omnibus of the first three Boogiepop light novels wasn't for me。 The teen angst, overheated melodrama, weird horror and sci-fi tropes, depressing fatalism, sadistic violence, and persistent misogyny caused me to tune out。 Yep, I'm not a disaffected teen obsessed with Japanese anime。 Even as a teen I would have considered this book irritating。 Although the non-linear storytelling is intriguing, the chapters are basically short vignettes with only brief hints as to what's going on。 I never felt like I grasped anything, but I didn't care。This book reportedly started the light novel craze in Japan, and I was interested in sampling its style。 Not impressed, particularly after being blown away recently by a rereading of James M。 Cain's Double Indemnity。 I won't continue with other Boogiepop novels。 Three was more than enough。 。。。more

Another very enjoyable light novel。 I have to hand it to the author, the very elaborate maze of relationships and moments they have crafted is an impressive feat。 The 3 books that this volume encompasses offer up a fascinating look into myths, imagination, and the awkward transition into adulthood。 What I found really fascinating was the way this book explores the loss of passion as people are ground out by jobs or expectations placed upon them。 Although the book is heavy on fantasy and sci fi e Another very enjoyable light novel。 I have to hand it to the author, the very elaborate maze of relationships and moments they have crafted is an impressive feat。 The 3 books that this volume encompasses offer up a fascinating look into myths, imagination, and the awkward transition into adulthood。 What I found really fascinating was the way this book explores the loss of passion as people are ground out by jobs or expectations placed upon them。 Although the book is heavy on fantasy and sci fi elements, the story ultimately is about finding your place in the world。 A thought provoking book that I would recommend to anyone interested in the transition from youth to adulthood。 。。。more

A phenomenal translation and experience。 Don't let the mediocre 2019 anime adaptation dissuade you from reading this。 Although the events are technically correct, a lot of characterization, psychological reasoning, and many important details were stripped from the adaptation。 The characters are interesting and nuanced。 The light novels themselves are gritty but reasonably so。 Everyone is a bit messed up, but the books are good not only at explaining why but making you feel and care about them。Th A phenomenal translation and experience。 Don't let the mediocre 2019 anime adaptation dissuade you from reading this。 Although the events are technically correct, a lot of characterization, psychological reasoning, and many important details were stripped from the adaptation。 The characters are interesting and nuanced。 The light novels themselves are gritty but reasonably so。 Everyone is a bit messed up, but the books are good not only at explaining why but making you feel and care about them。The philosophical bits are a lot less pointlessly pretentious。 Because we know why characters do things, the abstract parts of the story make sense。Not to mention the on page plot is explained much better, even if the story itself starts in a puzzling manner。I highly recommend this one if you want a grittier yet hopeful light novel series reflecting on human nature。 。。。more

I finished the first book in this series, but I lost interest somewhere in the second book。 I liked the idea of different perspectives coming together to get the full picture, especially in the first one, but for some reason, I just didn't find the second book as interesting as the first - despite all the weirdness going on, it just couldn't hold me。 I finished the first book in this series, but I lost interest somewhere in the second book。 I liked the idea of different perspectives coming together to get the full picture, especially in the first one, but for some reason, I just didn't find the second book as interesting as the first - despite all the weirdness going on, it just couldn't hold me。 。。。more

After over a decade, Boogiepop has finally become available in print again。 I'm not sure there is anyone alive that is more happy than me。 Boogiepop is my first literary love and will always hold a place in my heart。I wasn't sure how I'd feel after a 10 year break from Kouhei Kadono's work。 Would I still love it? Or would I, at the age of 34, have outgrown these supernatural tales aimed at kids in their teens? Thankfully, I can say that I am still a member of Team Boogiepop。 I may not have been After over a decade, Boogiepop has finally become available in print again。 I'm not sure there is anyone alive that is more happy than me。 Boogiepop is my first literary love and will always hold a place in my heart。I wasn't sure how I'd feel after a 10 year break from Kouhei Kadono's work。 Would I still love it? Thankfully, I can say that I am still a member of Team Boogiepop。 I may not have been quite as wowed as I was on my first outing to Shinyo Academy, but I still enjoyed every second that I spent there。 If I had the time, I could probably read these three stories on loop for the rest of my life。 That being said, I couldn't help note that there were a lot of spelling mistakes in this omnibus, definitely over 20。 It is a shame to see such sloppy proofreading on something I love so dearly。 But all in all, that didn't effect my enjoyment too greatly。 I'd rather have Boogiepop available to the public with errors in the text, than not available at all。It was also a shame that in a book full of colourful printed pages, that not all 3 of the original covers made an appearance in the inlay。Regardless of anything I may have said before, this is a fantastic trilogy that I would recommend to anyone, especially considering it basement level price。 Why the price is this low, how can you not afford to buy it? Bring on Omnibus 2! 。。。more

This pile of garbage written by a pretentious misogynistic ass is done。This would have been a better read if the author didn't hate women and wasn't killing them left and right。Only two males die throughout the book, both of them have piles of characterization and go out in a cool blaze of glory, one picking his own death。The women, no real characterization, just props to murder to show how evil whatever it is, is。 Women also being the villains。 Kouhei HATES women。 You can read what he thinks of This pile of garbage written by a pretentious misogynistic ass is done。This would have been a better read if the author didn't hate women and wasn't killing them left and right。Only two males die throughout the book, both of them have piles of characterization and go out in a cool blaze of glory, one picking his own death。The women, no real characterization, just props to murder to show how evil whatever it is, is。 Women also being the villains。 Kouhei HATES women。 You can read what he thinks of them in this book。The women in this book are only interested in things done by males。 Books, music, art。The first book is just a slaughterfest of women dying all over the place to The Manticore (man-eater) though she eats no men at all。 The story is taken over by Saotome and Echoes, both males。 THe only strong woman in here is Negi and she's depowered to let Boobiepop do his thing。The last duo book start with a woman killing herself at the start and she gets zero characterization and it's not really even explained why she killed herself in the first place。 Something to do with the Imaginator? Yeah she's a woman too, and she dies as well。 Orihata Aya is a breeder human and is abused greatly throughout the book and called "whore" because of it by the author acting through his characters。In the Afterword, Kouhei remarks that he wants to "Strap bombs to people" because they are giving him proverbs and how he's soooo much better than that and wants them to shut up。 Fuck that guy and fuck his books。Also this book is a Reprint omnibus of the first three books and Seven Seas couldn't be bothered to proof it for spelling errors and writing mistakes。 Maybe this book deserved that。 。。。more

A teense too pretentious to hold up well, these novels are nevertheless interesting, quick reads。
